I used to name my Totodile back in the original GSC era Chocodile, which was on a whim after playing it over during breakfast and I rather liked it. Then I found a few people on the internet had also named him similarly and I felt completeness over keeping him that way.

Otherwise, I usually just pick something random, keep it the same, or choose something I feel fits the Pokemon's personality. I had an unevolved Makuhita for all of HGSS named Gruul.
