in competetive play people try to counter type weaknesses as perfect as possible, and they also look at the base stats each pokemon has to find out which pokémon belong to the strongest of the strongest. Pokémon can even be trained in stats to be better than usual ones.

In metagame you can win the game with any pokemon. Because AI are usually pretty much too dumb to play smart plus there are level diffrences.

Claiming that someone else's marriage is against your religion is like being angry at someone for eating a doughnut because you're on a diet.

I find when people ask that question, especially online, it's stupid because then other trainers know what Pokemon that they are going to use and they'll know what to expect and find counters.  I use a Grade-A team, but I don't go around announcing my team, but if someone asks to see my team, the least I will do is tell them what Pokemon I use. But I never want to go around telling people my moves, abilities, and natures/characteristics. I may seem really over protective about this, but one of the secrets in becoming the best is to NOT share your own battling/training/breeding secrets. :)
