Here is why Raithen broke so easily. Hamon is evil, and he doesn't care who dies in order to get a job done. He does not sit there and play, he breaks by showing them how helpless they are.

Maybe have them limit themselves to a few spells, so no one can make up spells on the spot, kind of like what I did for Hamon, only 4 spells. (Like a pokemon!)
