I tended to catch Pokémon I liked, then carry on with them.
I believe my FireRed team was:
Blastoise
Pidgeot
Dugtrio
Mr Mime
Arcanine
Electabuzz
But since then I've learned why stats and moves are important, and thus have started thinking strategically. The team in my signature is the PVP team I plan on using in PU, and I have a moveset thought out already for each of them. However, for the gym leaders, I will just use starters and Pokémon I catch early in the game.

Got to disagree there. I absolutely love Darkrai. It's about the only legendary I like, and the only one I've ever used in a team (once, though). I hate seeing it in competitive battles, as you do... but I hate seeing any legendaries in battles; but I love Darkrai as a Pokémon.

Growing up in Floroma Town, Sinnoh, Professor Alder was always around Pokémon. As the seasons changed, the Pokémon visiting Floroma Town would change, and Alder found this as an opportunity to make new friends.
Aged 19: Alder started working for Professor Rowan in his lab in Sandgem Town, studying Pokémon evolution.
Aged 23: Alder met the world-famous Professor Oak whilst he was visiting the region. His studies inspired Alder.
In the same year, Alder quit his/her job at Sandgem Town to begin his/her own Pokémon studies.
Aged 25: Alder sees the very first satelite images of Miryus, a new region. (S)he rounds up a team of explorers and scientists to explore Miryus. They arrive via sea, Alder is the very first human to set foot in Miryus.
During the exploration, one of the team members claims to see Mew. Nobody believes him, but Alder still includes it in his/her notes.
Aged 26: Alder confirms the rumors that Miryus is home to every single Pokémon species.
Aged 30: As human civilisation has started to develop, Alder builds a lab in (starting town), seeing Miryus as a perfect opportunity to study Pokémon without having to move between regions.
Aged 35: Since human civilisation has now settled in Miryus, Pokémon trainers begin to arrive. Alder volunteers to give the trainers their very first Pokémon and teach them to battle with the help of his/her partner, Eevee.
