Ideas & Suggestions / Re: When pokemon faint..?
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:40:54 PM »
It will be too easy :P In my opinion, catching pokemons should be HARD :) yes, hard... When rare pokemons are really RARE, and when You have to spent some hours on catching rare poke, game is alot more interesting, alot more fun. And after catching rare You will blow up in happiness :) And You might be 'famous' for owning some of them :D It's a good part of gameplay, for collectors specially :P
unfortunately the rarest Pokemon in this game shall be legendaries as you can never get ^ ^ so you must be talking about the pseudo- legendaries, ie- dragonite, tyranitar, salamence, metagross, garchomp
Garchomp isn't a pseudo-legendary!  He's a counterlegendary!
And he is also getting Nerfed to bits, you can count on it // Gammal -  Master of Balance

Ideas & Suggestions / Re: Pokédex - Features
« on: April 10, 2010, 06:34:51 PM »
I really like the idea, and I think it would be better optional. Maybe it could be an option in the Key Items section of the bag? I really like the idea but it may take forever to make it for the pixel and vector team and what not. Hope this idea comes to use! :)

Yes of course, the scanning would be 100% optional.
I was kinda thinking an Pokédex icon beside the "switch Pokemon" option.

About the pixel work.
I don´t think it would be to hard, the scanning option could be something like; Letting the Pokemon blink black and white (or just stay black or white) and let a thick stream of color go from top to bottom, and then back up again, I can explain this is more detail when the time comes.
The scan would take like 0.5sec and then another 0.5-1sec for the pokedex to open (flashy effects go here :D )

General Chat / Re: What is the most underrated pokemon?
« on: April 09, 2010, 07:55:00 PM »
In the current meta game I really think Venusaur is very underrated.

I like that its grass/poison, with 2 stabs (grass knot and sludge bomb)
Making it an able counter to many grass Pokemon as well :)

how about every time a player switches, the other player has the option to switch or stay simultaneously without a penalty regardless of their decision.

That way both trainers pick each match-up totally blind every time.

No, the whole point is that you switch in a certain Pokemon to take an attack, if your opponent knows what kind of attack it is, his switch can be predictable, and you CAN switch at the same time as him, you just have to chose to do so.
Thats what I call "switching blind"

This is not going to change

General Chat / Re: What pokemon would you choose for your team?
« on: April 08, 2010, 07:37:12 PM »
oh its so hard to just pick six, but i gotta have

Arcanine - come on a loyal fire dog who doesn't love that?
Exeggutor - i lik to nickname him Executer haha, but i feel no one realizes this grass/pyschics power. with chlorphil(sp?) as his ability ill give hm sunny day so he always attacks first, then ill get one turn solarbeams (i know OP), with pyschic and sleep powder i love Exeggutor i really do
lapras or starmie - i can pick yet but be for sure these two will wipe people out
Espeon - i really want one recently
Raichu - no one can say heis weak, ill wipe the floor with raichu
Flygon - Favorite 3rd generation pokemon

you should pick starmie.. im pretty sure its better than lapras.

sigh, seriously... How can you know that? I´m one of the guys doing the balance on PU, and while Starmie will prolly be  better on the attacking part, I will make sure that pokemon like Lapras have their uses to, so please try and refrain from giving pokemon advice based on the current state of the game.
Thank you

Oh and my team.

Aerodactyl
Cloyster
Venusaur
Umbreon
Nidoking
Gengar

Wow.. sorry that i offended you...

i wrote that starmie was better based on stats in the real pokemon games! sigh, seriously how can you know what im thinking about based on my comment? i thought that forums were not a place for stating your own opinions...
This is PU forums, and I would assume anything that is not specifically directed to the original games (I dont see that in these posts anywhere) is directed towards PU, and I´m not offended, I´m just saying that if its about your PU team, then your statement might become incorrect :).
If however this team building is for the original games, then you are right, Starmie is the better choice.

And the forums is all about stating your own opinions, we  are working to ensure that as many people as possible will be happy with the game that we are making, and we cant do that without community feedback.

Ideas & Suggestions / Re: Pokemon in Player battles
« on: April 08, 2010, 06:01:48 PM »
I am concerned about the PvP in this game.
Here is a situation I wouldn't want - When 2 players meet - battle.... They battle until all of the pokemon has fainted. This is fine in theory, but there is one problem: Type Match-ups.
Will players be able to switch out their pokemon freely?
The point I am trying to make.... Example:
I battle and we put out our first pokemon in line- I have started with a fire-type and the opponent (who we will be calling mr.Guy) has started with a grass type pokemon. It would be a good match-up for me, but suddenly mr.guy switches to a water-type pokemon to counter my fire type, I reply by switching to a electric-type---- While mr.guy tries to go on my weakness again and switches to ground type--so on and so on until we get where we started with barely of any battle done.... That is a situation I dont want to be in.
Will players be able to switch out their pokemon freely in pvp battles?
If not great.... But it really all ends up on the first pokemon's type. We keep countering each other until the obvious mathematical result - the one who was lucky on the first turn wins the entire thing.
No, this is simply not true.
A Pokemon battle is so much more then "knowing the starting Pokemon´s type"
I can battle you on Smogon if you´d like, my first Pokemon is Aerodactyl, this does not ensure your victory, and I can prove it.

My suggestion to keep preventing this kind of result in PvP, is that it would be.... Like the Battle Tent in 3rd gen. When the battle is announced, the both players pick out 3 pokemon that they will decide to use in the battle. And they battle! No switching, you can only switch when your pokemon have fainted! 3 pokemon defeated and a winner can be declared!

There is probably something I missed in the forums or the site regarding this question. (Tried the search bar, didn't find much) But I am really concerned about the fairness of the battle system. Yes, I know my idea is probably pretty lame, and it is probably too late to implement it, but I find it relatively plausible.

Bottom line: I do not want PvP battles to become switch-fests. What should we do to prevent this?

I feel stupid asking this question.

Hello there, my name is Gammal and I´m (and 2others) are working on balance in PU.
I can understand your fears, but you also have to understand something.
If we completely remove the ability to switch pokemon during battle, will we also be removing great strategic depth.
More on that later, now I understad how you are thinking with the switching, but lets look at what you are suggesting a bit more in-depth.

This is a possible scenario with your suggested change.

I send out a Butterfree
You send out a Hundoom
Butterfree is 1shotted since its slower, and weak to fire.
I send out Infernape
Hundoom is 1shotted since its weak to fighting and slower.
You send out Flygon
Infernape is 1shotted because its slower and weak to Ground.

Im starting to notice a pattern here.

Not only would this type of game-play weaken the overall strategic relevance of your "picks", but it would also turn the PU meta game into something very boring.
So how would I build a team with this type of game-play?
1. I would only use really fast pokemon
2. All pokemon would have only attacking moves (thunder, eq etc)
This would also render Choice items such as choice scarf totally useless, cause you don´t really want to be stuck on a move and then not be able to switch out.

Furthermore; Pokemon like Umbreon, which is a support Pokemon (like many of the eevolutions are) would be rendered completely useless, and we would see its usage ratio quickly fall to 0%.
There are very few Pokemon that would fit the criteria, and the endgame would be very repetitive and boring.

And while I can agree that low-lvl pvp might get a bit tedious with all the switching, the battle will end sooner or later, and this problem will gradually fade away, since switching becomes more and more painful as Pokemon´s move-pool and attack stats grow.

Also just one quick question for all you, which of the following two games would you get first:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Final Fantasy XIII

Any input would be greatly apricated as I really can't decide.

I would just get battlefield bad company 2 instead...

Oh, and welcome  to the forums :)

Hello and welcome to PU forums!
Yes we have heard about the recent events concerning nintendo and other pokemon MMO´s, but rest easy, such a fate will not befall PU.
We are using our own sprites, all pixel art are created by members of the PU team, and we will not be violating any copyright laws.

There is currently a pre beta up and running, and we are working on getting the client to work, there is also a ton of stuff currently being made for the game, brows the forums and check them out.
Stay active, be polite, have fun!

I like the size and the art-work is very impressive.
But I feel  Swampert looks a bit.... slow and dumb :P.
This is how Swampert should look like if you ask me.

Dont get me wrong, it looks great, and I could never hope to do anything as good, but I feel its missing some "cool factor"

On behalf of the PU staff I would like to welcome you to the forums!
On the RP note; We are currently in the pre-beta phase, and are basically just working on getting the client to work.
Myself and two more are currently working on balance and we have a few people working on quests.
If you would like to contribute to the RP part of the game, or just learn more about it, go and read about the quests, you can even post your own!
Who knows, if they are good enough, they might be implemented.

Looking forward to some insightful posts on the forums from a fellow game developer.
