Completed Reports / #020 - Raticate
« on: May 07, 2011, 02:26:34 PM »
Name: Raticate
Number: 020
Type: Normal

Abilities: Run Away, Guts, Hustle

Base Stats:

Zen Headbutt

Icy Wind
Iron Tail

Egg Move Edits:
None

Example Set
Guts @ Flame Orb
252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Guts, Jolly
- Facade
- Sucker Punch
- U-Turn
- Brick Break / Reversal

Explanation of Set
Raticate is awesome. This set is full of pain, and can sweep up extremely well after your team fills the enemy team with holes and status problems. Facade is your bread and butter - coming from a burnt Raticate it is amazing - so amazing, in fact, coverage moves are nearly useless, as they are only useful if Facade is resisted, AND they are super-effective. Sucker Punch is what separates Raticate from other Guts users, it can use its priority to effectively ensure damage - and it especially helps with Ghosts.
U-Turn is great for leaving an enemy Pokemon with a hefty parting gift, while Brick Break is good against the types that resist Normal, such as Steel and Rock. When Raticate drop to below a third of his health, Reversal starts being more effective than Brick Break.

Example Set
Hustle @ Life Orb
252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Hustle, Jolly
- Hone Claws
- Sucker Punch
- Brick Break
- Return

Explanation of Set
This set is similar to the one before, but, you don't have an expiry date. You can use any item again, too! But, you lose the amazing Facade, and you get a big old accuracy drop. Accuracy drop is fixed by Raticate's new addition Hone Claws - and you're lovely from there. Again, it is recommended that your enemies are weakened before this Rat is brought out - you must also try to get the Hone Claws up - and that will likely require taking a hit.

Example Set
Special Attacker @ Expert Belt
252 Spe / 252 SpA / 4 HP
Lightningrod, Timid
- Focus Blast / Nasty Plot
- Grass Knot
- Hidden Power Ice
- Thunderbolt / Discharge

Explanation of Set
The main thing Raichu has is a movepool that extends to ridiculous places. This Raichu has great coverage - specifically the Bolt Beam combo that hits nearly every Pokemon in the game for neutral damage, while it has Grass Knot for heavy Ground Pokemon.
Discharge can be used over Thunderbolt if you want the chance to paralyze.
The final slot can be used in many ways - Focus Blast gives Raichu even more super-effective coverage for Expert Belt - while Nasty Plot can be used to boost up and possibly even sweep.

Egg Move Edits:

Example Set
Guts @ Toxic Orb
252 Spe / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Guts, Jolly
- ThunderPunch / Earthquake
- Facade
- Flare Blitz
- U-Turn

Explanation of Set
This guy can be pretty scary - he functions like Raticate but has different coverage and the powerful Flare Blitz - which, can sometimes end his life prematurely. For this I would recommend having a Wish supporter handy - who can heal up Typh as he hits hard. TPunch/Earthquake can be switched for which coverage you need more - TPunch covers waters, EQ covers Rocks.

Example Set
Flash Eruption @ Choice Scarf
252 Spe / 252 SpA / 4 HP
Flash Fire, Modest
- Eruption
- Flamethrower / Fire Blast
- Extrasensory / HP Ice
- Focus Blast / HP Fighting

Explanation of Set
This is a somewhat odd set - but it works absolute wonders when it goes right.
So, say you have Scizor on your team, and complimenting him is a bulky Venusaur, and... you're packing a Butterfree for statusing.  All of these pokemon enjoy a switch in, and so fire will be your opponent's focus. That's where this guy comes in. A scarfed Typhlosion is likely to move first, it is likely to get the 150 power Eruption (337 power with STAB and Flash Fire) - and, so, if you've weakened your enemy enough, it will likely KO. If you are able to bait your enemy into this, great. If Typhlosion gets low on health - start using Flamethrower or Fire Blast. Hidden Power Ice and Focus Blast can just be used for general revenging.

Example Set
Unburden Dance @ Flying Gem
252 Atk / 208 HP / 48 Spe
Unburden, Adamant
- Grasswhistle
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Acrobatics

Explanation of Set
This set can be quite scary. Grasswhistle is your combo-starter. When your opponent switches them out, Swords Dance. Your next move can be Leaf Blade or Acrobatics - but, to get the Unburden boost, go for Acrobatics. That Acrobatics will be at 110 Base Power, * 3 Damage for the Swords Dance and Gem and it'll put you at 2x Speed. At this point you're going to be moving first against all but Priority. With the HP investment hopefully Sceptile can take some weak priority hits.
Obviously you'll want to KO any Steels and Flying types that could ruin your sweep before you attempt it - though Sceptile can be used early for sleep support. Try to sleep his counters.

Egg Move Edits:
- Baton Pass

Example Set
Safe Physical Sweep @ Leftovers
252 Atk / 88 Spe / 170 HP
Speed Boost, Adamant
- Protect
- Sky Uppercut
- Blaze Kick / Hi Jump Kick
- Night Slash  / Swords Dance

Explanation of Set
While most Blaziken try to go out with a bang, this one tries to build himself up and deal constant damage. The more switches he can force, and the longer he can stay in with Protect and Leftovers, the more he'll get done. 88 Speed allows Blaziken to outspeed a boosted Gyarados with 2 Boosts.

Example Set
Mixed Sweeper @ Life Orb
144 Atk / 240 Spe / 128 SpA
Speed Boost, Naive
- Stone Edge / Rock Slide
- Vacuum Wave  / Protect
- Hi Jump Kick
- Overheat

Explanation of Set
This Blaziken is mixed. He Speed Boosts as usual - and tries to deal hits from both sides of the spectrum.
128 EVs for Overheat makes it pretty devastating, while it makes Vacuum Wave very useful against other priority users.
144 in Attack gives your Physical moves enough bite to be a real threat.
Protect is useful for getting an extra Speed Boost - but the high EV investment with a positive Speed nature should make one SB enough. Vacuum Wave is good for making sure you get the first hit always.

Games / Re: The 4 Normals
« on: May 06, 2011, 05:57:29 PM »
Pretty hard to choose between these.
Snorlax is the most generally usable in competition - and next to that, Slaking is actually very potent if used right.

After that, Miltank is a defensive beast who is oddly fast, (reminds me of Tentacruel but on defence) - and Tauros is just freaking COOL.
Its Sheer Force set is actually decently capable. But of the 4 it's likely the lowest threat sadly.

Example Set
Claw Sharpen Salac @ Salac Berry
154 HP / 252 Atk / 104 Spe
Gluttony, Jolly
- Claw Sharpen
- DynamicPunch
- Stone Edge
- Fire Punch

Explanation of Set
Switch in when you can, set up a Claw Sharpen, and hope the first hit you take, takes you just below half. After an Attack, Speed and Accuracy Boost, Simisear is scary - DynamicPunch increases its chances of survival, Stone Edge gives useful coverage, and Fire Punch is your standard STAB.
104 Speed EVs ensures you'll out-speed a +1 Gyarados after your Salac Boost - who probably won't enjoy a Stone Edge.

Solid Rock, Impish
- Wood Hammer
- Earthquake
- Synthesis
- Roar

Explanation of Set
This guy can take hits like a beast. You know, as long as they're not ice-based. Solid Rock gives it 1/2 damage from Super Effective hits (as of PU), but, Ice is still a big problem. Torterra is a great as a Pokemon who can switch in on common hits - now it can even take Fire, Bug and Flying just fine. What a beast.

Example Set
BellyZard @ Salac Berry
252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Blaze, Jolly
- Belly Drum
- Substitute
- Fire Punch
- ThunderPunch

Explanation of Set
You need 30 HP for this, no 31 IVs for you.
This set is absolutely beastly, now that Stealth Rock isn't around - and it's a damn good reason to pack a Quagsire - who can take this set all day. Priority also beats it if you can take the sub out.
When Charizard gets +6 Atk, and < 1/3rd health, it has 4x Damage from Belly Drum, and then its Fire Punch has 1.5x Damage from Blaze, resulting in 6x Damage...
Salac allows a sweep, go for it.

Example Set
Curse @ Leftovers
252 HP / 252 Def/SpD / 4 Atk
Unaware, Impish/Careful
- Curse / Amnesia
- Recover
- Ice Punch / Waterfall
- Earthquake

Explanation of Set
I have nightmares of this guy. He can come in on pretty much any boosted attacker, shrug it off, and either Curse if he's a physical variant, or Amnesia if he's specially oriented.
While Quagsire is most useful as a physical defender, special variants are absolutely possible.
It's up to you to decide how you want to lay Quagsire out. Quagsire with Physical investment and Curse is impossible to take down by the vast majority of Physical attackers - the same with Special attackers on Special Quagsire (when they lack Grass).
The mixed sets however are possibly very useful - Curse with a Specially invested Quagsire can become a stupidly effective wall which likely needs to be phazed out, while Amnesia with Defensive investment is the most bulky Quagsire set on average.

Name: Scizor

Example Set
Boost Priority @ Life Orb / Leftovers
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Technician, Adamant
- Bullet Punch
- Metal Claw
- Pursuit
- Bug Bite / U-Turn

Explanation of Set
Watch out - this guy means business. While his 105 Atk may seem *just* usable compared to his base 130 of old times - Metal Claw takes a resisted hit, and turns it into a +1 Boost to Attack, from a move that has 82 Base Power AND STAB.
Once you get one or two of these up, Scizor can start Bullet Punching and Pursuit-ing as needed.
Life Orb deals more damage, while Leftovers makes an extended stay more likely.

Example Set
Banded Priority @ Choice Band
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Technician, Adamant
- Bullet Punch
- Rock Smash / Superpower
- Pursuit
- Bug Bite / U-Turn

Explanation of Set
You think Scizor got nerfed? Okay he did... but, it doesn't stop this set from being insanely powerful. It still causes a stupid amount of damage, with STAB'd Priority.
A new thing about this set is Rock Smash - Superpower has great damage, but it lowers your attack. Rock Smash not only deals fair damage (with 82 damage from Technician), but, doesn't lower your attack, and drops the Pokemon's Defense - often either forcing them to switch out, or take a much more powerful hit for staying in.
You do not want to be on the recieving end of a Technician Rock Smash from a Banded Scizor when you've got -1 Defense.
