Start pokemon (please answer)

just a quick question,

lets say i pick charmander as my start pokemon, am i able to catch all the other starter pokemon in the wild, otherwise it will be sad that you can't really complete the pokedex.

I dont think you can catch them, but i do believe you can trade them. Someone correct me if im wrong
