If you want to...
yes the symbol ^ means 'raised to the power of'

And to complete the square, you divide the term in x by 2, and remove the square of what remains before x. After that, insert the brackets between the term in x^2 and in x, divide both by x and put the square sign.

This gives:

x^2 + 2x + 1 = (x+1)^2 - 1 + 1 = (x+1)^2
