Magnitude
« on: August 30, 2010, 06:02:10 PM »
Wow. I'm actually posting a serious topic... pretty cool huh?

Okay, so my question is: When using the move Magnitude, will it be like in the games themselves or just serve as a weaker Earthquake? Because in other games I've played, it's an Earth attack with like 50 or 60 Power. Which is lame, because it's meant to be a move that makes you go:
"Oooh, I hope it's Magnitude 10."

Mr Squiggles used Magnitude!
Magnitude 4!

"GODDAMNIT!"

Inflicts regular damage. Power is selected at random between 10 and 150, with an average of 64:

Magnitude   Power   Chance
4                10        5%
5                30        10%
6                50        20%
7                70        20%
8                90        20%
9                110      10%
10              150      5%

This move has double power against Pokémon currently underground due to Dig.

Earthquake is always chosen for consistency. It's always going to have 100 BP (150 with STAB involved) while Magnitude's will vary.

Not "always", my good man. ;)

With my GOLEM I chose Magnitude instead of Magnitude simply because I like to take chances. I liked the satisfaction of seeing:

"Squiggles (Yes, my GOLEM's name is Squiggles) used Magnitude!"
"Magnitude 10!"

But, yeah... it often failed to get 10... but I still like the move more than Earthquake because of it's unreliability. :)

Magnitude is the kind of attack I only use when I'm out of PP with everything else.

...if four is the lowest... then my camerupt is the devil. I only get magnitude 3's. Seriously.

I used "always" in terms of the competitive environment. Outside of that, or in-game, any move can be effective if used right. So, it's completely up to opinion on which one is used.

From a competitive standpoint, however, Earthquake is always a better choice.

Magnitude has about a 15% chance of being more powerful than earthquake. So earthquake is better 85% of the time. I dunno, to me, it sounds like magnitude just sucks in comparison.
