Oh, well if I were injured THAT seriously, I would be dead soon. But in fact, a tear in the leather/chainmail/overlapping plates that would go in places that needed flexibility might go unnoticed if it's the same color as my innards. Gross, I know, but extremely manly.

Rust is brownish. This would be blood-colored, so I could hide it if I were bleeding. Ever heard the joke about the pirate who wore a red shirt during tough battles so that his men wouldn't lose morale if he was wounded?

If I had to be a knight, I would definitely make sure the fiish on my armor was red, so I would not only look badass, but it would always be impossible to tell if I was wounded.
