I really want to jump in and say something Frenchfry-like, but it's Leo, so I'll just sit in the background for now.

What does Proffesor Oak say in the first? That was what I was going by, but my friend and I got Black, and he was saying Water was Medium, Grass was weakest.

He said those related to the pokemon themselves, not their types.

Charmander would be the most difficult (in the first games) with the first gym as rock, second as water.
Squirtle would be okayish, since it gets you the first badge easily, but second and third not as easily.
Bulbasaur would be easiest, given first gym is rock, second water and third electric.

I guess that it was the original idea of saying that about those pokemon.
