Anyways, why do you assume that people picking charizard are all invariably retards that want a dragon? Also, I literally laughed my ass off when I saw this:

People who choose Squirtle are more, "Okay... so it's gonna be pretty difficult to train right, but I'm a gamer and I like a challenge. Bring it on."

If we're gonna make steriotypes then how about this:
People who choose squirtle are just sci-fi dorks who think "OH EM GEE! IT HAS CANONS AS BLASTOISE!! IT'S SO KEWL!!!" Whereas people who pick charmander think more along the lines of, "Well, Charizard was screwed by the balance team of gamfreak, but having a flying starter will be invaluable in the future, so let's do it."

Oh boy, this would be a wonderful world... By the way, I wasn't shunning squirtle. I was just pointing out how narrow minded steel was being.

Anyways, The terrain advantages to each:
Squirtle: Surf. Good when you haven't gotten to all the cities yet, and when you want the game to be more of an adventure than a distraction.
Charmander: Fly. Good for when you're in a rush, getting back and forth between the Elite four, and saving yourself a ton of random encounters.

Battle:
Squirtle:
Water is one of the more versitile types, and because of that, you can turn squirtle into just about anything.
Charmander:
fire types are less versitile, and can really only burn and attack. They make up for this in their Attack Power, which they can use to Hit the Weak Point of a Giant Enemy Chorphish for Massive Damage. It's proven. This battle took place in real japanese history.

Looks:
Squirtle and Blastoise is just about the only non-ugly shell-wearers in pokemon. Squirtle's kinda cute, though can never match that of a mudkips or pichu, and comes complete with a recently solved enigma as to name origins (SQUIRrel tail. TurTLE Shell.). Blastoise has canons, and is thus automatically a tank. The drawback is that Wartortle is 100% phail.

Charmander:
Bad. Ass. Charmander is a So-innocent-it's-menacing kinda thing. Charmeleon is like the pissed off version of Shadow the Hedgehog. Charizard is a dragon. He's a dragon that was probably just designed before they decided to make the overpowered type we know a dragon. Plus, they all have FIRE ON THEIR TAILS!

That doesn't mean they came up with the type before coming up with Charizard, though, since he's the evolved version of the third pokemon ever. Or maybe second. I'm unsure. I just know Bulbasaur is the first.

Off topic, you find extremists in every group ever. Extremism one way or another is always bad. Though I do get a chuckle about how they reject us evolving from ancient creatures, but accept that the first man was basically a dirt golem and the first woman sprouted from a rib of a dirt golem.
